10d the BIG question...

Employees of the public sector (government owned organisations) , including teachers, are preparing to take industrial action to protect their pay, retirement age and pensions. Over the bank holiday weekend the NAHT (Head Teachers' Union) voted to poll members on taking industrial action if the proposed pension changes are enforced.

"They say changes being proposed will mean they will have to work longer for less money and that, on average, a head teacher will lose about £100,000 from their pension."
The BIG questions:
1) What might happen to the motivation levels of teachers and head teachers if the changes to pensions and pay freeze do go ahead?
2) Good pensions and an early retirement age have been an important factor in recruiting teachers as the basic pay is not as good as could be earned in similar jobs in the private sector. What might the impact of these changes be on teacher recruitment?

  1. Wow the teachers may get even lazier then they already are! and they may want to strike so we will lose lessons, They will all go into the private sector as they will not have the motivation of the better pension so it will not be worth it as they could just earn extra money.

  2. 1) Their motivation will decrease therefore standard of teaching will drop and students will not get the education they would have liked.
    2) There will less people wanting to become a teacher so there will be a shortage of teahcers out there so they might have to lower their standards and employ teahcers that aren't that skilled in teaching.

  3. The teachers motivation would completely drop. This may cause for them to not care and drop below teaching standards, that will effect the hole school especially students. Teacher recruitment will drop majorly because people partly join teaching because of the early retirment age and good pension.

  4. The impact of of these changes, on teacher recruitment, will rapidly decrease, because they need to not go into debt, so they wil choose a higher payed job.
    The motivation levels of the teachers and the head teacher when they get a pay freeze and when their pensions are decreased, will be that they wont want to be a teacher because it wont be very entertaining and most of them will not be able to have a normal standard of living, and would not be worthwhile

  5. The teachers might probably go on strike if they change the reiterment and pesnion stuff. If they change things then it will be harder to get people tyo eb teachers if they will get rubbish retirement stuff because they wont want to work.

  6. 1.) They wont want to work , leaving the school with no teacher and a head teacher . And they cant have people not working .

    2.) the teacher then wont want to work because they wont have a pension , or one with not enough money which will then lead them to debt .

  7. 1)the teachers will be less motivated as a result of this they may not be as intrested in teaching, this could effect the teaching standards, which will effect the hole school.
    2)it will be a lot harder to recruit teachers as not as many people will be intrested in the job.

  8. because teachers and heads are working more time and for less money, the teaachers might feel annoyed at this and not be as motivated, to work harder because there not getting any pay rises or extras. low pension age and high pension, encourage people to work harder for these, to motivate them but if theese are not in place they wont work as hard as they did when they reccived theese bonuses.
    schools might struggle recruiting teachers, as there are easer public secctors that pay the same, teacer s have alot of changing and if pay and pension is not good they will choose a different career while there young and be put of by theese oay freezes.

  9. 1) they may not want to work as much because they arent getting enough money which will put a strain on living expensives and they will; have less and less money left over to spend every month.
    2)this meansthat less teachers will want to be recruited in the public sector and may go for jobs in the private sector becuse they will get more pay and the jobs are similar.

  10. 1) If teachers are subjected to pay freezes, they may lose their motivation because they know that they won't have to work as hard for a pay rise as their salary will be frozen. This will apply to everyone who works in the public sector.

    2) Because as people in the past have decided to go into teaching because of the benefits in the long run, if these benefits are limited or lowered, then the idea of becaming a teacher will seem less appealing. The number of people applying to be a teacher will fall and something will have to be done in order to attract people once again as our countries educational system won't function without teachers.

  11. 1) the teachers and head teachers motivational level will drop because they are losing a lot of money. having to work long for less as well. So more teachers and head teachers will not be as motivated to work, which will then affect the pupils.

    2) these changes will have an impact on teacher recruiment because there will be less people wanting to become a teacher when their pention and pay is being cut. Meaning schools will find it much harder to get new teachers in who they need.

  12. 1) The teachers may not want to work as hard becasue the pay will be frozen. This will effect the students leading to rubbish GCSE's, not allowing children to get good jobs.

  13. the teachers willbe less motivated to work and will not be more likely to become teachers because they will be getting less pay than they could have done. the impact on this will stop people wanting to become teachers because of they are getting less pay.

  14. 1) Motivation levels of teachers and head teachers will go down in a lot of cases, as they feel they won't be working for as much. They will be working longer for less amount of money, so they feel it's less worthwhile.
    2) One of the man reasons for being a teacher is the better pention, with less money whilst working. Therefore, if the pention is not as appealing, people will be less willing to work for less amount of money in the end.

  16. 1)If the changes and pay freeze go ahead, less people will want to become head teachers and teachers because they will have to work longer for less money and they will feel this doesn't give them motivation to work.
    2)It might become harder to recruit teachers because less people want to be them. Some people would want to be teaching because it is well paid and the retirement age is earlier so if these change then it will be ahrder to recruit teachers.
