11a BIG Q MAN UTD

Answer the BIG question on the blog:

When the Glazer family bought the majority of shares in Manchester United they chose to take Machester United plc off the stock market and changed its legal structure to a private limited company (ltd). This meant that only people the Glazers invited to buy shares in Manchester United could do so whereas when the football club was a public limited company anybody could buy shares. The key shareholders in Manchester United are Malcolm Glazer and his sons. Question: Why do you think the Glazers chose to take Man Utd off the stock market and run it as a private limited company instead of as a public limited company?

  2. They chose to do this to prevent other rival families or companies buying the majority of shares in a hostile takeover, or prevent the from buying enough shares to have an influence on the amount of power the Glazer family has.

  5. I think they chose to take it off the stock market because it meant that they would not have the worry of loosing a high share of their company to other rival families who may pay more than the glazer family, therefore being able to take over the glazers. If they take it off the market, they can invite only certain people and only sell a certain amount, so they would not need to worry about being taken over by someone else.

  6. the rason they did this was so they were protected from a takeover because no one could by the shares needed to take themover

  11. The Glazer family did this because they knew if they kept it on the market it would be brought over again. And if they did keep it on the market and people brought lots of shares they would be at a loss whereas the other companies would gain the family's power and will be able to do what they wish. Furthermore, if the company were to lose Manchester United Football Club they would be out of money that they could have earnt otherwise.

  12. The Glazers might have made Manchester United a Ltd after buying it out because if it remained a plc then it could have been rebought and then they would have lost more than half of the business and therefore lost control, so therefore made it a Ltd so that no-one could buy shares on the stock market and thus they retained control.

  13. The Glazers chose to do this because to prevent other people to buy the majority shares of Manchester United. This is called a hostile takeover.

  14. BECUASE IT WOULD BE EASIER TO RUN AND THEY WOULD GET MOST OF THE PROFIT.

  15. so that other people cant buy shares unless they are invited, this means that they can limit how much is brought. this can prevent a hostile takeover.

  16. The Glazer family may have made Man utd into a private limited company, this means the price of the shares won't change as only people who are invited to buy shares are able and not to the public who could invest in it. This prevenets hostile takeovers from occuring as the public can't buy the majority amount of shares in order to take them over unles they were invited to.

  21. So the Glazer family will ahve more control over the business as tyhere are not as many people with shares. They can only invite people, not have random people investing
