10A Big Question

Read the Farmhouse Fare' case study carefully on page 150. Why do you think Helen chooses to make cakes by hand? What do you think the disadvantages of making them this way are?

  1. She chose to make them by hand so that she knows that she is making it the way she likes it and she knows whats going in it because she likes using natural ingredients. Also it would cost less to make them by hand.
Disadvantages could be that she doesn't get as many made, which means she will make less money.

  2. I think Helen chooses to make her cakes by hand because it would be too expensive to have machines for 14 different flavour cakes and she enjoys making her puddings.
    Disadvantages of this would be:
    - Takes too much time, machines would be able to make her more, so she would make more profit
    - Machines are more accurate, Helen may put too much of one ingredients at a time, the machines would be very precise and would avoid errors
    - Human Errors, May leave the cakes in for too long.

  6. Helen chooses to make cakes by hand because she think that its the nature of the puddings and she insists on only using natural ingredients. The disadvantage is that it will take a longer time to make the cakes and she has to employee full time employees which means that she will be loosing her money as she has to give out Wages.

  7. helen probally chooses to make the cakes by hand because she wants to keep her puddings traditional
The disadvantage with this is that she can't make loads at a time so producing a lots would take time

  8. Helen most likely chooses to make the cakes by hand because it is a tradition she is carrying on, but also because it allows her to easily change what she is making and suit the wants of the customer, and also because it is believed that hand-made food is better. The disadvantages of this is that is that is used human labour and not machine, and therefore cannot be worked continually and is prone to human errors, causing mistakes.

  9. helen choose to make the cakes herself by hand because it will be to expensive for the machines because the cakes come in 14 different types of flavours. disadvantages are: it takes too long: might not be cooked properly.

  10. because it taste better and taste is important to make customers come back but on the other side the diadvantages would be that they take longer to make and makes the staff work harder

  12. I think helen chooses to make the puddings by hand because it can be her USP, as she can advertise as being hand made puddings obly, increasing sales. It also means she can make puddings exactly how she wants them, meaning she can make her puddings perfect. It also may keep prices down, as she wouldnt have to by expensive machinery which she may not have the money for. The disadvantage of her making them by hand, is she probably cant make as many by hand as she could by a machine, so sales could go down and she may not keep up with demand now she is supplying to big super markets.

  13. Helen's chose to make them by hand and from natural ingrediants as it could her USP and could get more sales. It is also makes the product have authenticity and can charge a higher price as it takes longer to produce and is by hand rather than machine (Mass production).

A disadvantage is that she can only produce in a batch size quantities rather than mass production and so can't sell to as many to retailers.

  14. helen decides to make her cakes by hand because she wont have to buy the mechines to do all the work. Also she wont have to worry about unexpected fees off the mechine breaking.helen will not have to tajke out a loan to get the money to pay for the mechines that she wanted to buy.

A home made/hand made product gets more atention then pre made one.this is because people like how it is still made by hand and not done bty mechines all the time.

  15. Helen chooses to do them by hand as it works with her brand image; it makes her puddings seem more traditional and authentic, also it allows her to change the puddings to suite different consumers as she sells them to many different supermarkets. However the disadvantages of making cakes like that is that humans could make mistakes more often than machines, also a machine could work more for less as people would need pay and time off.

  16. btw, I forgot a disadvantage... 1 disadvantage could be human error which could affect the quality. Also she may not be able to produce as many products as producing it using another method.

  17. I think that Helen chooses to make them by hand because it is made to satisfy the customers, when Sainsbury’s ask her to make them differently to suit the needs of other customers. When this is done by a machine it won't turn out to Helen's standards. Also it keeps them fresh and makes their taste not go to waste. It is more expensive and you will need more people to do the machines, etc.

  18. I Think Helen makes the Puddings by hand as it would cost less and likes her puddings to be made from natural ingrediants and making them by hand is more natural and traditional than making the puddings in a factory :)

The Disadvantage is that she may not be able to make as many by hand therefore that means she will recieve less inflow. :)
