Read the Farmhouse Fare' case study carefully on page 150. Why do you think Helen chooses to make cakes by hand? What do you think the disadvantages of making them this way are?

  1. helen decides to make her cakes by hand because she wont have to buy the mechines to do all the work. Also she wont have to worry about unexpected fees off the mechine breaking.helen will not have to tajke out a loan to get the money to pay for the mechines that she wanted to buy.

A home made/hand made product gets more atention then pre made one.this is because people like how it is still made by hand and not done bty mechines all the time.

  2. 1 advantage is that she can keep costs down on machines and she does not have to pay staff to make it for her, as these staff may not be as familiar with the recipe. Handmade food will give her a unique selling point which means she can increase the price of her puddings. A disadvantage is that each pudding differs due to human error so people may not be too keen on trusting the reliability of the puddings. She may also not be able to expand her business as she cannot work as fast as a factory

  3. the advantages of helen making her cakes by hand is that she wont have to pay the money to buy the machines to start the business and the money to maintain and repair the machines if they brake. also if a customer hears the phrase hand made in a product then the product then seems to see that its better quality and of a higher standard compared to the cakes made by a machine.

a disadvantage is that it will take time for helen to make lots of cakes if she was an unsually high peak period and she could lose vauliable business. also if helen made all her puddings/cakes by hand then she and her work force would take forever to produce a big load of puddings/cakes for sainsbury's.

  4. An advantage of making the food by hand is that she does not need to buy expensive machines, or worry about their maitenance or fixing them. It also gives her a unique selling point, which allows her to charge more for her product as customers believe that it is a higher quality if it is made by someone.

Disadvantage could be that she needs to train all of the staff the recipes. There could also be human error and each pudding may differ as a result. It may also hinder that amount of product that she can produce as they can't work as fast as machines. The employment costs might be high if she employs lots of people to make the pudding if they want to expand.
