Read the 'Trading Standards' case study on page 169 of the black books. Have
you, or somebody you know, ever been a victim of any of the dishonest business
practises identified in the case study? Briefly explain what happened. How did
this make you or them feel. If you haven't personally been affected see if you
can find a news article on the internet where Trading Standards have had to
intervene. Briefly explain the article.

I bought a pair of football boots from jjb in Farnham, the boots had a 28 day warranty. However, a couple of months later, my nice leather boots split in half. This annoyed me as they shouldnt be splitting. I therefore took them back the shop and complained. At first they were not going to change them, however after complaining for a couple of minutes, they changed their minds and let me change my boots for free :)

Vodka and gin drinkers were getting less than they bargained for at a restaurant in Gloucester a court heard today.
ReplyDeleteSamples taken by an officer from Gloucestershire County Council’s Trading Standards Service during a visit to the restaurant in Westgate Street, Gloucester, were found to have been falsely substituted with cheaper, inferior brands.
Appearing before Gloucester magistrates, the owner of the restaurant pleaded guilty to two charges of tampering with the ‘Smirnoff’ vodka and ‘Gordon’s’ gin on sale at the bar.
He failed to identify to the Trading Standards Officer what was actually in the bottles and a prosecution was brought against him for misleading his customers.
He was fined £480, and ordered to pay costs of £575 plus a victim surcharge fee of £15
Eddie Coventry, Head of Trading Standards, said: “Consumers have a right to know what they are eating or drinking and do not expect to be served with anything other than what they have ordered and paid for. We will not hesitate to take action against those who we believe are deliberately cheating the consumer.”
The International Federation of Spirits Producers, which represents the major spirit brand owners, believes that on average, customers are being ripped off to the tune of £43 million a year by proprietors substituting expensive brands for the cheapest spirits they can buy.
