11x The BIG question
Japan is the originator of lean production. Explain how the recent Earthquake might cause businesses that are very lean to stop producing all together.
It might have stopped them producing all together as they would have probably been using JIT meaning they only order in products when they are needed, since the earthquake hit they will have run out of resources but be unable to order new ones as they wont be able to be delivered to them etc.
Part of lean production is minimising wastage. This includes a method called JIT which means they only order in products when they are needed. the recent Earthquake means businesses will not have the resources they need and will not be able to order in new ones as they will have no way of being deliviered.
Because lean production includes things such as MIMO and just in time, because of the recent earthquake they are going to need to put maximum input in to get customers buying after this event, also stock may not be available at all stop just in time re-stocking also routes might be blocked due to the earthquake.
It would mean their raw materials would run out due to their JIT method meaning that they'd have minimum stock & with no way of replacing their stock after use.
Production will stop as machines will be in down-time and halted until further action is made and a solution is found.
They will need time to recover as their suppliers may have been affected and deliveries will be delayed. This would mean that their methods such as bulk-buying and the Just-in-time system may stop.
Some businesses that are very lean may have to stop producing all together becuase of the fact that they might be using Just In Time scheme which relies of the suppliers to deliver the stock Just In Time for production however with the recent earthquake there could be the chance that businesses will have long delays on deliveries which therefore might increase the chance of stopping production. Another factor could perhaps be that the business might have taken in a lot of damage therefore the company could be spending a lot of money on repairs. Which could mean that production would have to stop because of there being not enough revenue for production.
It will mean that if they use the just in time method, they will not have much stock in and not much backup stock and wont be able to get any more stock in because of the destruction so they can't continue producing stuff becuse they will have no stuff to make stuff with.
Lean production often incorpates the idea of just in time. After a natural disaster such as an earthquake, it is unlikely that suppliers will be able to reach Japan so those businesses will not be able to produce any products. This will be especially bad in a country such as Japan because Japan has very few resources of it's own therefore relies on imports and if there has been an earthquake, with a possibility of aftershocks, only things that are absolutely necessary - such as aid - will be taken into the area.
Becky: Some businesses will have been totally destroyed by the earthquake and may not have enough money to start up again. Also, they may not have enough workers to run the business. Businesses that are very lean may have to stop producing all together because they don't have any materials to use if their stock can't be delivered due to the destruction.
Part of lean production is JIT and so when the low amounts of stock runs out, new supplies may not be delivered. Buildings and infrastructure would be destroyed and so work would have to stop as employees and deliveries would not be able to be transported.
businesses may have stopped producing their product because if they were using just in time, they would not have any raw materials in their factories and they wouldn't be able to get anymore because there's no form of transportation
bcuz people are spending all of their money on repairing the country's infrasturcuture so will not be spending money in shops, so the goods that would have been made if they continued would not be bought and the company would just use on storage space, which can cost more if the space needs heatingif goods are perishable or what not. also if companies are using just-in-time they may not be able to get materials delivered so can not produce
If most of the businesses are using JIT this means they are only ordering products when needed. With thwe earthquake hitting they are unable to order products meaning their production has to stop.
this might stop japan businesses producing together because this will stop lean production because all materials and staff will be hard to find, because all materials will be destroyed, also being hard to find the sources. also struggling with J.I.T
The recent earthquake may cause businesses to stop producing all together because a business may have been totally destroyed or damaged. They may also not be able to get any materials or staff to them because trasport will not be the same as before, some transportation may even be closed. Lean production over all will be affected because the materials will affect the JIT method, as they will not have any other supplies. Team work will be affected because some staff may not be able to get in contact or work.
It may stop them from producing because if they were using JIT then all of the raw materials will not be able to reach the workshops and there isnt anyway of the raw materials reaching the workshops.
as there are now no transportation methods and no land for the business hq's there are no ways of Agetting the raw materials to the workshops and warehouses and there is just no where to work.
Chloe, ellie and kish the earthquake has stoped the delivery trucks getting to the companies so they cant make the products, and most japanese companies use just in time, some companies can continue to make products if they still have some materials left over.
It could have stoped the production all together as the eartquake and flooding could have compeletly taken out the business's production factories which would have completey destroid the business all together let alone slow the production down. Despite this, buisnesses will not be able to deliver their product as there is no transport
